The U9’s Kings opened their season at Home to Spofforth on a bright and slightly (!!) chilly evening.
Captain Harry Dawson lost the toss (it was the only thing he did wrong all game) and Spofforth elected to bat.
Some tight opening bowling from Jake Stalker set the tone, conceding only 4 runs from his two overs. Fellow opener Oliver Ward chipping in with a wicket. Spofforth batted well, but consistent bowling kept the score down, further wickets being taken by Harry Dawson and Oli Hewson, who also took a great catch. Spofforth reached a competitive 260, with the only criticism being a few too many wides from Knaresborough.
Chasing the target, Boro opened with Ward and Ben Tomalin, Tomalin using his power to smash three fours, which helped the opening pair reach 25, with no wickets lost. Enter Captain Dawson, who hit four glorious cover drives, rare to see at this age group. Harry ended on 24, top score of the match, and assisted by Ennis MacKenzie, Boro were close to their target at half way. Oli Hewson and James Hampson pushed the score along, again not losing a wicket. Spofforth had kept their best bowler for the end, Alex Richardson and Jake Stalker defending resolutely to ensure we only lost one wicket in the entire innings. A great effort, and we finished on 296, to win by 36 runs.
Well done to all.
