Our Under 11 side got off to a winning start with a tense victory at Birstwith.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, Knaresborough got off to a steady start, reaching 18 before the loss of Max Bachellerie for 4 in the 8th over.
Scoring proved difficult on a green wicket with Samuel Baines (4), Jacob Procter (3 runs) and William Wilson (0) back in the hut with 23 runs on the board at the halfway point.
A steadying stand of 21 between Matthew Everstead (7) and Oli Dexter (13), after the unexpected departure of Luke Balbi without troubling the scorers ensured Knaresborough reached 48 for 6 wickets with 3 overs left. Unfortunately the tail failed to wag and the innings quickly closed without further score.
A modest total of 48 seemed indefensible – but little did Birstwith know………..
A tidy opening spell by skipper Ben Brennan and Jacob Procter set the tone for the second half. Yet it was only the introduction of Matthew Everstead and Luke Balbi that swung the tide Knaresborough’s way.
Both Luke and Matthew claimed wickets with their first ball, the dangerous Kit Keith being caught by a great catch behind by William Wilson off Matthew. Max Bachellerie leapt like a salmon to dismiss Birtswith’s opener.
Luke Balbi continued his devastating 1st over and claimed 3 wickets to rip out Birstwith’s middle order.
Luke retired to the boundary with excellent figures of 3 – 0 – 7 – 3.
Clever bowling changes by Ben Brennan and excellent fielding by Harry Limb, Dan Wetherill and all others put Birstwith in trouble at 17 for 5.
Enter Oli Dexter, Max Bachellerie and debutant Ben Ward. All bowled with control , Max with pace and Oli with excellent line. Birstwith continued, undeterred from the pressure, and crept upto 38 for 6 needing only 11 to win with 7 overs left.
A nervous finish was assured. Ben Ward led from the front, with flight and guile he achieved the fantastic figures of 4 overs, 2 maidens, 0 wickets for only 4 runs to send Knaresborough supporters into raptures of excitement.
Birstwith had closed on 46 for 8 – an agonising 2 runs short.
Well done boys – tight bowling, teamwork, encouragement and a willingness to win ensured 2 points came home in the bag and JJ and Will enjoyed chips on the way home!
Many Thanks to all parents for transporting and supporting, Dave Balbi for scoring and Libby for collecting the match fees.
